José Sabogal was a prominent Peruvian artist born in Cajabamba, Peru, on 19 November 1888. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Lima and later studied in Europe, where he was exposed to modern art.
Sabogal is best known for his work as the founder and leader of the Indigenist Movement in Peruvian art. His paintings depict the everyday life and traditions of the indigenous people of Peru, specifically those of the Andean regions. Sabogal's work helped to elevate the social and cultural status of indigenous Peruvians, and his legacy has had a significant impact on the art community in Peru.
José Sabogal was also a teacher and mentor to many aspiring artists in Peru. In 1918, he founded the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes del Cusco, where he introduced his famous painting style to young artists. He was also a co-founder of the Society of Fine Arts of Lima, which helped to promote the work of young artists and fostered collaboration between artists in Peru and other Latin American countries.
